The Big Collaboration Anime Project
Sunday, July 5th 2009

So... once again I'm lurking around the internet (4chan to be precise) and suddenly I stumble upon another interesting thread and thought to share it here.

The thread mainly talks about a collaboration anime between Gainax, well known for its Evangelion, Gunbuster and most recently Gurren Lagann, and Square-Enix, well known for its RPG games and Fullmetal Alchemist series. To top it off, this new series will be directed by Seiji Mizushima, the man behind the Fullmetal Alchemist anime and most recently Gundam 00 and this new series was announced at the Gundam 00 Preview Panel.

Of course, anyone who reads this will wonder, "Oh my God, what kind of awesomeness will be born from all this?". They say a picture is worth a thousand words and a moving picture is worth more than a thousand pictures, so.. please see it for yourself.

Did it managed to spark your "interests"? Or does it induce a major facepalming on your part? Well, I'm actually interested, as I think there will be many references from well known animes over there, but..

Seriously... the colaboration anime is a loli themed one? WHAT IN HEAVENS??

Stop Motion Animation.
Sunday, July 5th 2009

About a week ago, as I rummage through a board on 4chan, I stumble across a really strange video on youtube. As I am a fan of gundam and gunpla (gundam play model), the video really interests me. It shows someones gunpla (and other stuffs) moving on screen, creating somekind of a story.

The moving picture or can we say, animation technique used is called stop motion animation. It is a very time consuming technique where we capture a still image of an object, move a certain part of the object, and then capture the image again, and so-on. After that, the image is played and what is shown is as if the object is moving.

It is prone to accident as the slightest tremor could disrupt your animation, and to create a very smooth animation, we need to capture more frames and will need more time to finish. Yet it is an animation technique, that almost anybody with an abundant amount of time and patience could do. As an example, see this popular dance :

As we can see, the animation isn't as smooth, yet if you own a figma at your home, you must know how much of A PAIN it must be to even put up the first 20 seconds of the dance, let alone animate it. Next, is another popular dance, although it doesn't use an "exact" portrayal of the characters. Be warned, this is not for those with a weak stomach..

All in all, stop motion is a really neat animation technique. And with a little... no, with a LOT of time and some video editing, you could create your own anime and original story. Of course to create the visual effect, you'll need more time and some artistic skill. :D So, anybody wants to try it? I know I don't...

K-On! The Manga version!
Saturday, June 20th 2009

So... as the anime version is nearing it's ending I thought of trying to brought the manga version into attention. The K-On! anime is adapted from the manga version, and as is true with many manga-to-anime ones, there is a few discrepancy between the manga version and the anime version. This is one of the examples :

As we all seen from the anime, Yui was having a hard time at her first year mid-term exams. Yet, nothing was told about how she deals with her finals. The manga shed a light in for this, as it turns out that she barely made it. That aside, the first thing I notice is of course a full view of Mio's "bowl of rice", as the manga doesn't pull out on the ecchi factor, like what was done in the anime. Another major point is Mugi's strange visions.

The manga made full view that Mugi had a bit of strange orientation of things, yet the anime only show hints of it. And then of course, there was the music store that is owned by Mugi's family. It seems that Mugi is a bit more abusive about her status.

This would make Mugi's depiction in the manga and her depiction in the anime is the one that is most diffrent. Other then a few missing pieces, the anime actually follows the manga faithfully, at least for the funny stuffs.
In the manga, there are literally no conflict within the club, like, there are no Azu-nyans crying and asking why they're playing so well together although they're always slacking off, and there is no Ritsu x Mio fighting. The manga is purely there for the laughs. As the anime only follows the manga up to volume 2, the ending of the anime is pretty much different than what was shown in the manga. I think that there will be a volume 3, so it'll continue a bit more where the anime left off, but I can't seem to find it.
Ok, thats it I think. Here's a bit of the manga's crazy antics. Remember the 100 points test that Yui score? What do you think happened to it?

And of course, there is no principal on the anime, so I think I should add him too

Motorcycle and Robots
Saturday, May 16th 2009

So I decided to write something and post it here. Well here we go.

This is my review for an anime called Rideback. Maybe some of you had watched it before, and maybe some other haven't, but it is an anime about a motorcycle-mecha hybrid called Ridebacks (as someone in the anime noted, Ridebacks are a "gattai" between a robot and a motorcycle).

The setting is somewhere in the not so near future (although the year is 2020, I doubt anything like this can really be made on 2020). The worlds government (it isn't said in the anime but I think it is the UN) had been thwarted by a military group called the GGP. They basically became the new UN and bossing other countries around in the name of peace and order and Japan is also one of those countries.

The main story revolve around Ogata Rin, a talented balerina which happens to stumble upon a rideback on her first days at college. Her balet experience gave her a good sense of balance and reflexes, so that she is a natural on a Rideback. Ok, so mecha fans would find that the early premise sound familiar. A boy (or in this case, a girl) stumbles upon a state of the art mecha, gets on the said mecha and started to wreak havoc, right? No. Although Rin does becomes an "ace pilot" of some sort, she doesn't really joined any sides and only ride Ridebacks to save herself and her friends.

Rin's Rideback riding gives her joy, yet at the same time gives her troubles, as the GGP is starting to expand their influence over Japan, and Rin must overcome all of it and find what it is that she really wants.

The strong point of this anime is its cool 3D Ridebacks. It is rendered very nicely and the action will make most mecha fans happy. The story however, is really not clear. The thing that is mainly shown on screen is Rin's development, while the main conflict of the story got finished without proper explanation of what's really happening. The show actually shows only some hints of what might have happened, but it is still left for the viewers to imagine, what really happened. Rin's clothing for most of the episode is also... meh..

All in all, aside from a few flaws, it's a preety good mecha show. Each episode is really good, but the ending came to fast. If you haven't watched it yet, you should try to start watching it. It's only 12 episodes, so you wouldn't have to invest to much time into it, and although the end isn't really what you would expect, you will enjoy the ride.

Well, at least, Rin's enjoying her ride.
