More gender bended anime characters
Saturday, June 27th 2009

After finding the gender bended version of characters in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, I did some more search to find whatever anime had their characters gender swapped by their fans. While I do hope that some of these gender swapped version be made into a full series, I understand that the story would have to be changed (perhaps in a major way) to avoid awkwardness.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu

This is the first anime (with no gender-swapping in the actual story) with gender bended version available I know. For sure I like how they transform Kyon into Kyonko and Itsuki into Itsuhime. In fact, I even think that Itsuhime is more appealing than Asahina Mikuru.

However, I doubt this one would make it into a full series without some minor change in story. I had seen some animation being made with the gender bended characters. However, somehow something twitch when I watch Haruki (male version of Haruhi) kick the computer club leader (also turned into a girl), which I see as an example of ungentlemanly behavior.

Clannad

I found this among the piles of Suzumiya Haruhi gender bending version video in YouTube, the day before I write this article. I appreciate how the artist change the gender while leaving the characteristic of each character intact. Just FYI, someone also make a live version of Clannad as well. The name is "Clonnad". If your are interested, just google it up.

But then, I found myself asking "Why Clannad?" even now. For sure, the story is going to be really awkward without lots of major plot change. For sure I don't want to see female version Sunohara being combo-kicked by male-version of Tomoyo. The After Story would be even more awkward since it involve Nagisa being pregnant as well. Well, at least sad ending is going to be less possible this way. But that is going to reduce the dramatic value of this anime series.

Lucky Star

I found this in YouTube the same day I write this article. There is no animation available for this and the fan art is scarce as well. While it is fun to look how the male version of these characters look like, I doubt I am going to watch it should someone decided to make a full series out of it. But perhaps it could be a good way to make the anime fangirls willing to watch Lucky Star.

The Melancholy of Haruki Suzumiya, a genderbending doujin anime
Wednesday, June 24th 2009

While I don't really get the story of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, it seems that this anime is really popular. I did enjoy watching its parody The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan (the super deformed version of Haruhi), though. However it seems that there are more parody to this show. One of them is titled, The Melancholy of Haruki Suzumiya. Basically in this parody, the gender of all characters are swapped.

Suzumiya Haruhi, who is a female in the orginal anime was turned into Suzumiya Haruki (which is a male, thus the title of this post). The other girls in the anime was also turned into boys as well, Nagato Yuuki and Asahina Mitsuru. I bet it is not really hard to guess who is who.

The male characters are of course turned into female whose names are Kyonko and Koizumi Itsuko. Again you can guess who is who.

Honestly, I don't really feel it right when Nagato Yuki defend Kyon from Asakura in the original anime. However, since in this particular Doujin Anime the gender was swapped, it looks better. However if you remember the part where Haruhi make the president of Computer Club molest Mikuru and all characters in the anime was gender-swapped, somehow this part doesn't feel right.

There is still no anime produced for this doujin, however some fans already attempted to make some animation for it. It would be really interesting to see this doujin anime made for real in the future. For now, we can only satisfy ourselves by reading the manga.

Difference between real Yui and Ui disguising as Yui
Saturday, June 20th 2009

While Ui in disguise had been able to fool most of the light music club members, especially Azusa. It is actually not really hard to tell the difference between real Yui and Ui in disguise.

The first telltale is of course the voice. Their voices are different and if your ears are sensitive enough, you can tell that the two "Yahou" in episode 12 are somehow different.

Then as Sawa-chan sensei had said (I assume reader of this post already watched episode 12 until the end), Ui and Yui have different size of chest. It is quite apparent from the picture above.

It seems that in Yui's school, students from different grade wear ties with different colors. For example, Ui and Azusa wear red ties while Yui, Ritsu, Mio and Mugi wear blue ties. Additionally the students keep their color until they are graduated from the school. That is why Yui, Ritsu, Mio and Mugi also wear blue ties in episode 1 - 7.

Ui disguise is good enough since she wore a blue ties over her blouse. Perhaps she took one from Yui's room. However she forgot the fact that students from different grade wear indoor shoes with different color on their tips. However, it seems that the club member don't bother to look at the shoes she worn.

Calling Azusa as Azusa-chan, Ritsu as Ritsu-san and Mugi as Tsumugi-san however, was the final give up. Somehow that is enough to make Ritsu and Mugi suspicious, before Sawako sensei finally asked her to spill the beans.

K-ON! episode 12, Yui sickness and School Festival
Saturday, June 20th 2009

The School Festival is already imminent. However the lead guitarist of light music club is in trouble. She got flu and have to take some rest at home. If she don't get well before the festival, then she won't be able to participate in it.

The episode begin with Yui seeing Mugi in her dream. Yui asked about why Mugi's eyebrow is thicker than the others. Mugi's reply in the dream was because they are actually pickled radish. Mugi peeled the pickled radish from her eyebrow and let Yui to eat it with rice. Very weird indeed.

It seems that Yui is having a high fever and Ui was really worried about it. Yui will have to stay at home until her temperature go down. Ui was really worried, she peek on her sister several times until Yui said that she is going to be fine and Ui have to go to school anyway.

In school, Azusa and Ui are discussing about Yui's sickness and how it will affect light music club performance in the school festival. Later Mio and Ritsu come to their class to join the discussion as well.

At first they thought that it is Ritsu the one who gave the sickness to Yui (in episode 11, Ritsu is the one who got sick). However later Ui explained about Yui being to excited trying the Yukata sewn by Sawa-chan sensei and end up wearing it the whole day during the cold season.

Anyway, it seems that while Mio is a bit shy when she have to wear strange costumes, she also think that it is interesting to let Mugi try those costumes. Additionally, I don't know how Sawa-chan sensei have the time to make all those costumes.

The next day after the school hours had ended, members of light music club gather in the music room. Then Yui entered the room and they started to practice together. However during the practice Mio, Ritsu and Mugi started to detect some kind of anomalies on Yui.

It turns out that the Yui they seen was not really Yui, but Ui in disguise. They looks alike since they are siblings anyway. Since Ui play guitar better than Yui, Ritsu even think whether it is okay for Yui to keep resting.

The real Yui appear later in the music room, telling everyone that she is alright while holding a box full of tissue. Of course the other did not believe her and asked her to rest at home until she really got better.

Finally it is the school festival day. Yui did not come to the club even when the band performance is about to begin. Then Nodoka come to the music room realizing that everyone is waiting for Yui.

Realizing this, Nodoka told them about how Yui fill her bathtub with shrimps she catch when they were little. She said that Yui is always like that. If Yui decided to do something she will do it well and forget about anything else. That remind me on how Nanodisaster usually depicted to happen in various space opera.

As Yui already promised she really appear later in the music room later with Sawa-chan sensei. She even had worn the yukata, which cold protection capability had been upgraded by Sawa-chan sensei.

It seems that Azusa is the one who was really worried about Yui. Again, I would question the straightness of Yui, but perhaps it is the space time around her which is curved. She hugged Azusa and told her that she was sorry for making her worried.

But when she tried to kiss Azusa later, she got slapped across the face.

It is ironic to see that while Yui had worn the Yukata when the other have not, Yui have to perform without wearing that particular Yukata. The reason being she have to run from school to fetch the guitar she left at home and run again from her home to school.

My impression about this episode

I would say that I really like this episode. I really liked how Ui disguised herself as Yui. I think that particular scene worth another blog entry on itself.

The two sisters actually really looks alike, except for the fact that their preferred hairstyles are different. But since the shape of their faces are pretty much the same, they may look similar once they decided on the same hairstyle.

Recommended Not so New Anime ( 1 )
Wednesday, June 17th 2009

Having been a loyal anime watcher for 7 years, sometimes I found that good anime are not always the new ones. Some anime are still good compared to newer ones and here's some not so new anime that I would recommend my readers to watch.

1. Naisho no Tsubomi

This anime is basically about a sixth grade elementary school girl named Tsubomi, who is experiencing puberty and her mother is going to give birth to a baby sister soon. Just like everyone during their puberty, Tsubomi is flooded with both information and misinformation about growing up.

This particular anime was made based on a manga with the same title authored by Yabuuchi Yuu. She was one of my favorite mangaka during high school as one of her earlier work The Aqua Age is also telling about how growing up looks like from a girl's point of view.

2. Da Capo Imaginary Future

Da Capo was a story about Asakura Junichi and his friends (mostly girls, just like other harem setting) living in a crescent shaped island named Hatsunejima. In the original Da Capo anime, Asakura Junichi end up to marry his step sister, Asakura Nemu. This caused quite an uproar among the Da Capo fans who like Shirakawa Kotori better than Nemu.

The fact that during the initial episodes of Da Capo Second Season, Shirakawa Kotori was depicted to have taken care of Junichi for two years or so only to have Nemu win Junichi again for the second time didn't help to settle down the uproar. That is why additional videos titled Da Capo Imaginary Future was made. In this 2 episodes, the one who won Junichi is Kotori, while Nemu being in wherever Kotori's fan want Nemu to be.

3. I my me, Strawberry Egg

OK, I would admit that the title of this anime is a bit odd. However, this anime has a really good story in it. The story is about Amawa Hibiki a college graduate who want to become a school teacher. However when looking for an employment, he end up realizing that his money had been used up. The only employment available is in a Saito Sannomiya Private School, which headmaster is a sexist hag who want to cut off the number of anything male in her school. Therefore, to get the employment he want, Amawa Hibiki have to crossdress as a female teacher.

4. Sensei no Ojikan

This particular comedy anime tell stories about a high school national language teacher Mika-sensei and her students who happen to have their own antique personality. The relationship between Mika-sensei and her students is so close. Sometimes it is not clear whether her students really see her as their teacher or their playthings.

5. Akane Iro ni Somaru Saka

This anime seems to be adapted from a Visual Novel. I would say that the adaptation is imperfect, but if you simply want some good laugh, some drama and some pure nonsense this one is recommended. The story was centered around a high school student named Junichi Nagase who is known as Geno Killer due to his rebellious behavior when he was younger. Due to this reputation, he was able to save a girl (Katagiri Yuuhi) from a trouble without any fight.

However, Junichi Nagase doesn't seems to be a boy with sensitiveness. He kissed Yuuhi (without consent) when they meet again for the second time. Additionally, it is in a public place. Then hilarity ensue.
